Dealing with homesickness

Starting university in a new country is a thrilling adventure, but it can also bring feelings of homesickness.

It's normal to face these challenges in the first few weeks as that's when you're doing most of your adjusting but fear not, as there are plenty of ways you can minimise these feelings and make Southampton feel like home too:

  • Stay connected with your loved ones — Thankfully technology has made it easier than ever to stay connected with family and friends back home. Schedule regular video calls or chats to keep in touch as sharing experiences and emotions with familiar faces can provide comfort during times of homesickness. Please do be aware of time differences though, sound does travel at night, so if you are calling home during antisocial hours, please be considerate of your flatmates.
  • Engage in university activities — The University of Southampton offers a wide range of clubs, societies, and events catering to various interests. Engaging in these activities not only helps in making new friends but also provides a sense of belonging.
  • Explore Southampton — One of the best things about moving away is all the new experiences that are available, but you will need to actively explore to find them. Southampton is a vibrant city with lots to do and there are even more opportunities if you're willing to go further afield.
  • Seek support from us — Don't be afraid to reach out to the university's student support services or international student advisors if you're struggling with homesickness. They are experienced in assisting students through such transitions and can offer helpful advice and guidance.
  • Connect with other international students — You don't have to face this alone, there will be other students in the same position. Attend orientation events specifically designed for you, where you can meet these other international students who you can form a support network with.

Remember, it's normal to miss home, and seeking support from the university and fellow students can make the journey more manageable. These things can take time, so don't worry if you find yourself struggling longer than others. Embrace this exciting chapter in your life with an open heart and mind, and you'll find yourself flourishing sooner rather than later.
