Life in Southampton
Getting around
You'll be glad to know there are many ways to get around the city and campuses when living here. From walking and cycling, to buses and trains — there are a number of different options.
Buses
If you are living in accommodation that is owned and operated by the University of Southampton, then a Unilink bus pass is included in your accommodation contract. This pass gives you access to Unilink and Bluestar bus routes throughout the city of Southampton. The services connect all of our Southampton halls and main teaching campuses.
Your bus pass will be ready for you to use when you arrive. Once you are settled, you will need to download the Unilink app and create an account using your University email address. Once you have created an account, you will receive a bus pass gift code for you to activate on the app.
When you are using the bus routes around the city, simply scan the QR code within the app on the scanner at the front of the bus each time you get on board. You don't need to tell the driver where you are going but do remember to thank them when you get off!
As well as the Unilink bus, SUSU also offers a Safety Bus. The Safety Bus is a free service to help make sure you get home from venues on campus safely. Running every evening from outside the Students' Union straight to your front door — it's definitely a service to make the most of.
Bicycles
If you are bringing your bike we have a number of bike sheds available for you to use. Once you move in please let reception know and they will provide you access by either your student ID or fob.
Remember to bring a good quality D-lock with you, and always lock your bike, even if you are just popping into a shop for a few minutes. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
As part of your Gallagher contents insurance in halls, you get insurance up to £500 for pedal cycles on campus only if something were to happen.
E-scooters
The City of Southampton has an e-scooter rental scheme by Voi Scooters. There are docking stations at most halls, on campus, and around the city. To ride these you must be at least 18, with a full provisional UK driving licence.
They are a popular way of getting around but please make sure you drive them safely and dock them back in the docking stations.
Cars
We are only able to offer parking spaces in halls if you have a certified medical condition or exceptional circumstances that require you to use a vehicle. Due to this, we strongly discourage all residents from bringing their cars with them.
Applications must be made in writing to parking@soton.ac.uk before you arrive and you may only use a designated car park if granted access. Please note that is the policy of the City Council not to issue parking permits for use on residential roads or in council car parks to residents of University halls.
